Status and Balance

Learn how to check and manage your mileage balance with other members

Status Balance

The "Status" section allows you to quickly check your mileage balance with other members of your groups.

  1. Navigate to the "Status" section from the bottom menu.
  2. Select a group from the list of groups you belong to.
  3. A list of group members will be displayed with their mileage balance relative to you.
  4. The background color of each member indicates the status of the balance:
    • Red: You owe miles to that member.
    • Green: That member owes miles to you.
    • Gray: Neutral balance (0 miles).

Balance Details

When you tap on a member in the Status Balance screen, you'll see detailed information about your activity:

  1. A screen with balance details will be displayed, divided into sections:
    • Me as Passenger: Trips and miles where the other member was the driver.
    • Me as Driver: Trips and miles where you were the driver.
    • Agreements: Miles forgiven by each party (if there are agreements).
    • Total Miles: Final balance.
  2. For each section, you'll see the number of trips made and the total miles.
  3. At the bottom, the final balance between both members is displayed.

Note: The total balance is calculated by subtracting the miles as a passenger from the miles as a driver, and adding/subtracting the forgiven miles as appropriate. A positive number means someone owes you miles, and a negative number means you owe miles.

How Balances Are Calculated

ComparTrip's balance system works as follows:

  • Miles as passenger: These are the miles you've traveled when someone else was driving. These miles are counted as a "debt" for you.
  • Miles as driver: These are the miles others have traveled when you were driving. These miles are counted as a "debt" for them and "credit" for you.
  • Forgiveness agreements: These are miles that have been "forgiven" through agreements between members. These adjust the final balance.

Balance formula: Miles as driver - Miles as passenger + Miles forgiven in your favor - Miles forgiven against you = Final balance

Practical Use of Balance

The status balance helps you maintain fair control of shared trips:

  • If you have a negative balance with someone (red), you should offer to drive on upcoming trips or propose a compensation agreement.
  • If you have a positive balance with someone (green), that person should drive on upcoming trips or propose an agreement to you.
  • A balanced status (gray) indicates a fair distribution of the load between both members.

Important: The goal of ComparTrip is to maintain a fair balance among all members. Try to keep your balances as close to zero as possible with all group members.

Adjusting Balances with Agreements

If you want to compensate an unbalanced status without having to drive, you can create an agreement:

  1. From the "Agreements" section, you can propose compensations to adjust the balance.
  2. This option is useful when:
    • You can't drive but want to balance your status.
    • You've helped another member outside the app and want to reflect it.
    • You want to make a "clean slate" with a member.

Note: For more information on how to create and manage agreements, check the "Agreement Instructions" section.
